THINGS

The glow of an autumn sun, on yellow leaves

'T h i n g s' simply refers to almost anything around us. It could be a physical object, an action, an event, a phenomenon, a vibe, a fashion, a feeling, anything at all. Its anything that stands exists outside of us. It may be a table lamp, it may be a pair of shoes, a single shoe, it may be the tree at the park or the bench next to the tree.

We are surrounded by things, we think about them sometimes, ignore them as mundane most of the time, use them sometimes, discard them sometimes. But strangely, especially with inanimate objects, they are always around.

We can do many 'things' with 'things'. We can collect them, we can separate them, we can arrange them , we can move them, but they somehow stay silently out of our immediate attention, and they seem to play their part, and stand aside, almost endlessly, unless we explicitly bring our attention to them and interact with them; its simply mysterious in a way, because the thing has a way of disappearing from our immediate attention without disappearing at all, almost in an imperceptibly obvious way, Things make no effort to give anything away, they stay immobile and unmoving, just beyond the reach of actual understanding.

Sometimes, I ask myself how much do I know about my table-lamp?

What really lies beneath our feet at each moment is not a usefulness, but an inaccessible netherworld that we can use because it is there.

Our knowledge of things, may exist specifically with respect to their descriptions and properties. The structure, the shape, the smell, the colour, the texture, or in terms of the role the thing in an interaction with other things. But the deeper we go the more impossible it seems to become, to objectively describe a thing in totality. Because somehow the thing, is not just its attributes but also some-'thing' else.

The only way somehow seems to be the description of the thing, in the context of a larger thing, on the context of an even larger thing, or smaller, almost infinitely so.

Weekday evening practice

This obscurity is one of the mysterious factors, and I think it facilitates a sort of 'fading from our immediate attention'. Things are always somewhat mysterious. And thats what I think their true essence is. They are detached.

The first photograph, was taken during one of my walks. It was a cloudy overcast day, and the whole scenery seemed dull and monochrome. But as I walked, there were moments when the sun shone through the clouds, revealing the bright yellows and fading greens of the autumn leaves, the latent moisture in the air adding a sort of glow to the whole scene.

The second photograph, was taken on a mundane weekday night when I was just working with with my guitar; taking a few breaks to read a book and just passing the time waiting for the next bit of music that I would feel like keeping. It's taken from a different perspective. As with everything else, a new perspective brings a different thing to light, in this case the microcosmic-world, that was immediately surrounding me. It consists of my guitar, my amplifier, a portion of the laptop and the book I was reading at the time, placed on a stool. Also a portion of the couch and the floor.

Finally, a short guitar play-through of the track. Hope you enjoy it and thanks for listening!
